Here's a pic of what the dress looks like now:
It's not 100% complete and I did make some adjustments. I cut the length of the skirt shorter because I am short (5 ft 2) and I didn't like the way the skirt was so long on me. The other thing that I'm not sure of is the full skirt look because I've already got full hips and I'm not very slim so I think it fills me out too much. I'm going to slim the skirt by making it into a pencil skirt. The other issue I'm having is with the back of the bodice. See below:
It bags up on my back like this. I'm not sure why - maybe because I have a short torso and then my hips start to fill out? Or maybe the size I used was too big although it fit the waist. hmmm. Things to ponder...
There was a lot of gape in the back so I added some darts and that seemed to fix that problem. The darts in the back were in addition to the darts that the pattern called for.
In the picture below you can see the darts on the inside of the front bodice. I used muslin as a lining and sewed it as one fabric.
Besides that, I had issues sewing the zipper. I had already sewed the skirt and bodice together (following the patterns directions) and that was a bit problematic. Hope no one looks too closely at the zipper lol - it's kinda crooked!
I still have to finish the hem and sew the straps on - I decided to do a black bias tape on the bodice - I'll post a pic when I'm done with that. Whew! It's my first dress so I guess it's not too bad?
What's your experience been sewing dresses with bodices? Any tips you can share?
